Specbee: Specbee is now a Drupal AI Initiative Partner. What does it mean for your platform?

The Drupal AI initiative that was launched in June 2025, is a funded and coordinated effort to build AI into Drupal and govern where it goes. It has everything needed for a successful initiative – a clear strategy and roadmap, a leadership team to drive the product direction, a funded delivery team, active work tracks and funding that are contributed by the founding companies and Drupal AI certified partners.
When “We need an AI strategy” became one of your goals this year, you thought that would be an easy one to achieve. After all, there’s so much AI around that offers easy (and quick) ways to draft content, design pages, and build entire websites.
Adopting AI is easy but trusting where AI takes your content, your data and your budget is not.  Every platform ships tons of AI features now. Not many answer the harder ones. Like who governs the roadmap behind them? Is it safe? Why should you trust it? Drupal’s answer is the Drupal AI initiative. And Specbee is now a Drupal AI Certified partner.

What is Drupal AI and what’s in it for you?

Start with an AI readiness assessment. Specbee reviews your content types, taxonomies, search setup, and editorial workflow, then flags where automation or smarter search would actually help. You get a prioritized list, not a generic pitch. From there, most teams begin with one tool, like semantic search or automated metadata, before expanding into a fuller editorial AI rollout.

  1. CKEditor AI assistant – streamlines your workflow, offers content rewriting suggestions, translations, summarizations and more.
  2. AI Image Alt Text – automatically generate alt text for any media with a button click using AI vision models.
  3. AI Translation – automate translation to a language of your choice with a click.
  4. AI-powered workflows – automate repetitive processes into actions with no manual effort or tech expertise.
  5. Agentic orchestration – build agents powered by your knowledgebase and models.

Drupal CMS is the product: a ready-to-use version of Drupal for marketers and site builders. The Drupal AI Initiative is the effort that develops the AI features going into it. The two are aligned, and the Initiative’s work feeds stable, production-ready capabilities into Drupal CMS. Think of one as the platform and the other as the team steering its AI roadmap.

What is the Drupal AI Initiative?

SmartLinker is Specbee’s AI internal-linking tool, built for Drupal’s CKEditor. As an editor writes, it scans the content and suggests relevant internal links in real time. Because it’s Drupal-native, it understands your content types rather than just matching keywords. Every suggestion is a suggestion. The editor decides what actually gets linked before anything publishes.
Here’s Dries Buytaert, Drupal’s founder and project lead, on the thinking behind it:
Drupal already has a strong AI foundation, with many community-built modules. Now, we’re channeling that creative energy into a clear, coordinated product vision.”
No. Specbee has built only Drupal since 2015, and that full-service work continues: development, migration, UX, SEO, support, and hosting. AI is one capability inside that, not a replacement for it. The Initiative deepens our AI work, but most engagements still start with a build, a migration, or a platform that needs to run reliably for years.

Why did Specbee join the Drupal AI initiative?

With Specbee as a Drupal AI initiative certified partner, your site can use the new Drupal AI features before they’re widespread. When you ask us if a new AI capability is safe to turn on, our answer comes from the roadmap itself. And because Drupal is open source and community-governed, you’re building on features that are unlikely to disappear behind a paywall or a single vendor’s pricing change. You get the most practical AI features within Drupal from a Drupal agency who helped build it.

What does this mean for your platform?

Drupal AI is the set of practical AI capabilities that are built into Drupal. From Drupal Agent Chatbots that can help build you a page to AI-powered search to enhance your search experience, Drupal AI comes loaded with AI features you didn’t know you needed. It is native to the platform so it reads your content types, taxonomies and site structure the way your developers do. Some significant features built in with Drupal AI:

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Drupal AI Initiative different from Drupal CMS?

Every AI tool we build for a client assists and drafts. It doesn’t publish on its own. Schema, metadata, internal links, and search suggestions all wait for a human to approve them. On the delivery side, our AI handles mechanical work while senior engineers review and sign off at each stage. You get the speed of automation with a person owning the final call.

Does joining the Initiative mean Specbee only builds AI now?

By 2026 it has now expanded to more than 30 partner organizations, over 50 active contributors, and several million dollars in committed funding. The 2026 roadmap sets eight priority capabilities, all aimed at stable, governed AI. Take a look!

What is SmartLinker?

As you must already know by now, we’ve built only Drupal since 2015 and we’ve always put work back into it. Modules, patches, time in the community. Joining the Drupal AI Initiative is the same instinct but pointed at AI. The AI features Drupal is bringing in will transform the way our clients use their platforms. We want a hand in getting them right. It also keeps us close to the roadmap, so what we recommend to you is based on where Drupal is headed.

How do I make my Drupal site AI-ready with Specbee?

We help build Drupal AI and not just use it. Our code and community contributions give us a real say in where it goes, and early access to what ships next. Your enterprise gets AI features that fit the platform, sooner than most.
