Centarro: Drupal Commerce vs. BigCommerce

Custom checkout flowsFully customizableBigCommerce’s costs rise with your growth, especially after its June 2026 pricing restructure:

–,499+/month ERP integration depth The B2B Edition of Big Commerce ships native RFQ and quoting, sales-rep masquerade, an invoice portal, company hierarchies with buyer roles, price lists, and quick-order pads. For distributors whose sales run through reps and negotiated quotes, it’s among the strongest B2B offerings in SaaS.
Worthington Biochemical’s order processes have served them for more than 75 years. Orders move through several states, each with conditions that must be met before the next transition, and only certain people can advance an order. Centarro modeled Drupal Commerce to enforce those rules, so the right people process orders at the right time, reducing mis-shipments and fulfillment mistakes. Drupal Commerce and BigCommerce head-to-head

Platform model and ownership

Drupal is one of the most capable content management systems available before Commerce is even added. With Drupal Commerce, your product catalog, marketing content, educational resources, member portal, and store live in one system with one admin interface, one set of permissions, and one codebase.Drupal Commerce

Product attributes and catalog flexibility

Low to moderatePOS

Example

BigCommerce has prebuilt connectors for NetSuite, SAP, Dynamics 365, and others, plus integration platforms like Celigo, Patchworks, and Jitterbit. Standard flows work with configuration. But API rate limits (about 20,000 calls/hour on lower tiers and 60,000 on Scale, unlimited only under some Performance contracts) constrain high-frequency syncing, and customized ERP records still need custom mapping. Even with connectors, development work is likely required.

Content management capabilities

B2B Edition or third-party apps; fees may applyAn electronics standards organization sells a large catalog of technical standards alongside a library of educational content. On Drupal Commerce, their content marketing staff have full control over landing pages, internationalization features help them reach a global audience, and an Elastic Enterprise Search integration lets them tune autocomplete suggestions and curate results for specific queries. The result is a catalog that’s easier to find for both on-site shoppers and searchers.

  • Who needs to approve an order?
  • What states does an order move through
  • How does it sync with your ERP and invoicing?

Drupal Commerce has no license fees, no transaction fees, no GMV caps, and no forced upgrades. Your investment goes toward development, hosting, and maintenance, which are costs you control. With SaaS platforms, integration overhead, workarounds, and escalating fees often push the realistic five-year cost well past its advertised sticker price.

Example

Drupal Commerce is an open-source alternative built on Drupal. You own the code and the data, there are no license or transaction fees, and every part of the platform, from checkout to order workflows to the product data model, can be shaped to fit how your company already works.

SEO/GEO control

On BigCommerce, POs come either from B2B Edition, where the PO option is built on the platform’s offline “check” payment method, or from third-party apps that add PO fields to checkout. Either way, your process has to fit what that feature or app supports.ExampleDays to weeks

  • URLs: Configurable URL patterns per content and product type, automatic 301 redirects when aliases change, and readable URLs for faceted search pages.
  • Structured data: Schema.org markup and LD+JSON for products, articles, organizations, and more, plus meta tags configurable by type and overridable per page.
  • Multilingual: Translated URLs, hreflang directives, and language-code URLs.
  • Indexing: XML sitemaps, canonical tags, noindex controls, and breadcrumbs.
  • Content depth: Products, technical documentation, guides, and articles live in one system and link to each other, so every page reinforces the others.

ERP and systems integration

BigCommerce is a SaaS platform that has earned its reputation with B2B sellers. Its B2B Edition handles selling with quotes, its catalog supports far more product options than most SaaS platforms, and its open APIs make it friendlier to integrations than many of its competitors. If your business fits neatly inside its walls, it’s a legitimate choice. Many distributors and manufacturers have found success on the platform.Native (Commerce Recurring module)

Pricing and total cost of ownership

Fully customizable, multiple flows per store

  • GMV caps force automatic upgrades. Core caps at $30K trailing-twelve-month GMV, including taxes and shipping, and Growth at $100K. Scale adds a 0.9% overage above roughly $33K/month and auto-upgrades toward Performance around $2M.
  • The Open Payment Provider Fee charges 2.0% on Core, 1.0% on Growth, and 0.6% on Scale for orders through non-embedded gateways, including offline payments like purchase orders. Depending on your volume, that can be quite the check to write each month just for using some software.
  • B2B Edition requires the Performance plan (from $1,499/month) and is custom-quoted for greater limits.
  • Apps are still needed for subscriptions, loyalty, and advanced personalization.

B2B Edition (top tier)

Platform stability and vendor risk

The trouble starts when your requirements don’t match the platform’s assumptions. Its best B2B features sit behind the top-tier plan. Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) caps force automatic upgrades as you grow. A new fee introduced in June 2026 charges a percentage on orders processed through non-embedded gateways, including offline payments like purchase orders. And when your order workflows, product types, or integrations go beyond what the platform anticipated, you’re forced to work around BigCommerce rather than with it.Free (open source)BigCommerce has undergone some major changes. Its founder-CEO departed in October 2024, the company went through layoffs in 2024, and it rebranded as “Commerce.com” in July 2025 with a pivot toward agentic commerce. While revenue has been flat, the company is profitable and holds more than 7M in cash, so near-term viability isn’t the concern. The practical risks are a shrinking ecosystem (including the March 2026 retirement of native Google and Meta integrations), a thin developer talent pool, and strategic uncertainty.

Setup and speed to launch

Development requirementSelf-managed or Drupal PaaS providerThe American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists sells memberships, courses, books, and event registrations. Their continuing education courses are modeled as their own purchasable type, with credit details, speakers, session times, accreditation data, and LMS access stored directly on the course. That structure supports pricing based on membership status, purchase timing, bundling, and multi-year terms, which would be difficult to represent in a standard SaaS catalog.

Should you choose Drupal Commerce or BigCommerce?

None

  • You need to launch quickly with limited development resources.
  • Your catalog is complex, but your checkout and fulfillment processes are fairly standard.
  • Your B2B needs match B2B Edition’s quoting, price lists, and company accounts, and the top-tier plan fits your budget.
  • You want fully managed hosting and don’t want to manage infrastructure.
  • Your integration needs won’t run into the API rate limits on non-enterprise tiers.

GMV caps / forced upgrades

  • Your B2B workflows involve custom approval chains, multiple checkout paths, multi-step quoting, or PO and invoice processes shaped by years of real-world operations.
  • You need purchase orders to work the way your company already handles them.
  • Content is central to your business, and you want products, educational resources, and member portals in one system.
  • You sell non-standard products such as digital licenses, courses, memberships, or highly technical goods.
  • You run multiple brands or storefronts and need shared carts, brand-specific fulfillment, or order splitting without per-storefront fees.
  • Your ERP integration requires deep, two-way data mapping.
  • You want to avoid transaction fees, GMV caps, forced upgrades, and tier-gated features.
  • You want to own your code, your data, and your roadmap.

Get started with Centarro

Drupal Commerce can launch a standard store quickly too. Commerce Kickstart, the Drupal Commerce site template maintained by Centarro, installs a working store with a theme, multiple product types, digital downloads, faceted search, and Layout Builder already configured. Your team starts from a functioning storefront rather than a blank site. You’ll still need hosting and someone to keep the site updated, either through a Drupal hosting provider or a support partner.
